North of France tourism: from Nazi bunker to the promotion of peace…
Since its transformation into History Centre and 3D Planetaruim, La Coupole has become a major attraction, a meaningful and fascinating site, high on the list of North of France’s tourist attractions.
Under the command of Nazi superiors, prisoners of war, mainly Russian, built what was intended to be the launching site of the V2 rockets bombs that would destroy England… the Allied efforts and importantly, the landings in Normandy in 1944 forced the Nazis to abandon the planned attacks and the site, leaving behind the underground war factory and its protective, concrete dome intact.
Today, this great symbol of Nazi destruction serves the promotion of peace; the museum’s permanent exhibitions include a life-size replica of the atomic bomb, the V2 and V1 bombs, traces the footsteps of the scientist, Wernher von Braun, attributed the technical discovery of the V2 and its descendant, ballistic missiles. A tour of the tunnels and galleries will take you back to WWII, an authentic memory center, to remind us all of the horrors of war. La Coupole contributes to research and education, helping us to analyse and understand this dark period of the 20th century.
