V2: The A4 rocket

The Éperlecques bunker and La Coupole
Built 10 km from Saint-Omer, this bunker was originally designed for the storage and launch of the A4 (V2) rockets. However, the site was badly damaged by American bombings on 27 August 1943. The initial project was abandoned and a new bunker was built on the same site to house a liquid oxygen plant that needed to supply the new launch bunker of La Coupole. The enormous concrete block that can now be visited at Éperlecques is thus the protective shell of a liquid oxygen plant.
